  Mission  location

• San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is located in San Luis Obispo which is about 3 hours south of where we are now.
• San Luis Obispo was considered a suitable because it had many bears, plenty of water, and mild climate.

Founding of the mission                                                         

•    Father Junipero Serra founded San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on September 1st, 1772.   

Building of the mission                                      

•      The Chumash Indians who lived in the area built the mission.
•      Things used to make this mission included adobe brick which is made with mud, straw, and water,and clay tiles which is made of clay and water.
•      From the top of the mission, it looks like a rectangle with with the cemetary poking out of the rectangle.

Life at the mission

•      The Chumash Indians, missionaries, and frairs lived at San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.
•      Missionaries taught novices about farming, ranching, crafts, and religion. They prepared religious classes, and preformed weddings, funerals, and baptisims.

Native Americans at the missions                                                         

•      The only Indian tribe who lived at San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is the Chumash.
•      The men did farming, ranching, leathermaking, ironworking, tanning, carpentry and building. The women cooked, made baskets, blankets, soap, and clothes for frairs, soldiers, and other Chumash.
•      They ate a mush of corn or grain called atole and a soup named pozole.
•     The Chumash Indians were treated badly because they were made to do everything.

Mission today                                                                                                              

•      San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is today being used as a church,community center, and a historical site.
•      San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is still standing to this day.
