Mission location
- San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is located in San Luis Obispo which is about 3 hours south of where we are now.
- San Luis Obispo was considered a suitable because it had many bears, plenty of water, and mild climate.
Founding of the mission
- Father Junipero Serra founded San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on September 1st, 1772.
Building of the mission
- The Chumash Indians who lived in the area built the mission.
- Things used to make this mission included adobe brick which is made with mud, straw, and water,and clay tiles which is made of clay and water.
- From the top of the mission, it looks like a rectangle with with the cemetary poking out of the rectangle.
Life at the mission
- The Chumash Indians, missionaries, and frairs lived at San Luis Obispo de Tolosa.
- Missionaries taught novices about farming, ranching, crafts, and religion. They prepared religious classes, and preformed weddings, funerals, and baptisims.
Native Americans at the missions
- The only Indian tribe who lived at San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is the Chumash.
- The men did farming, ranching, leathermaking, ironworking, tanning, carpentry and building. The women cooked, made baskets, blankets, soap, and clothes for frairs, soldiers, and other Chumash.
- They ate a mush of corn or grain called atole and a soup named pozole.
- The Chumash Indians were treated badly because they were made to do everything.
Mission today
- San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is today being used as a church,community center, and a historical site.
- San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is still standing to this day.
